History

Hailing from industrial Wuhan, AV Okubo was founded in 2006. The name of the band comes from a part of a Hong Kong Movie, First Love：The Litter on The Breeze.

Their performances are electrifying and burst with the crackling energy and sophisticated take on our throwaway garbage culture that animates the best pulp fiction and b-movies of the 1940s and 1950s.

All the band members in AV Okubo were born in the 1980s, and it clearly comes through in their music. Their memories of pop songs and movies from Hong Kong have been reinterpreted into a beat-driven rock and roll that keeps your brain dancing for hours.

They have played with bands such as Orange (Uruguay), The 4 Sivits (Germany), Ratatat (USA), These Are Powers (USA) and Battles (USA).

In the February 2010 issue of TimeOut Beijing, Michael Pettis named them as one of the top acts in 2010.^[1] On March 6th, 2010, they performed in the D-22 during the Beyond The Ocean show of Maybe Mars Records. According to Alex of Beijing Gig Guide: They have a great, catchy sound and an energetic and commanding stage presence. The crowd was completely caught up in the show, moshing and crowd surfing and singing along. They had one song that called for everyone to hold their hands in the air, which everyone did even as they threw themselves against one another in the mosh.^[2] On May 1st, they performed at the Strawberry Music Festival 2010. According to Beijing Daze: AV Okubo, from wuhan, made a believer out of me: I loved their set and their originality! Their bass player was one of the most energetic persons onstage all day! I’m not ready to call the “The future of music” like Spin Magazine did but I’ll give them props for doing really good stuff! I look forward to their other shows!^[3] On July 17th, 2010, they performed at the Qingyuan Niu Yu Zui Festival 2010.
