Maybe Mars & Converse Present: The China Invasion Tour. Beijing is buzzing and China’s new musicians are making themselves heard. A country known for rapid change, the past five years can be seen as a Great Leap Forward for China’s musical underground. Appearances at top international festivals and coverage in major press have highlighted some of the action. When an East coast tour with three of the top Maybe Mars bands hit New York last fall – packing out every show – the newest Chinese export began to truly go international.
Maybe Mars is the youngest of the two leading Chinese independent music labels. It was started by musicians who had found a home at D-22, the rock club that is credited with giving crucial exposure and support to Beijing’s exploding music scene. In its two years of existence, it has already signed 24 folk, rock, experimental and noise musicians and bands, including most of the artists at the forefront of China’s music underground.
Now with official invites from South by Southwest and through an effort by Converse to help support the emerging Rock n’ Roll scene in China, six of China’s best bands are back for a West Coast tour:
