VBS recently tagged along with Brooklyn's Birthday Boyz on an unprecedented tour into the hinterlands of China's underground rock scene. While Bjork and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs graced government-sanctioned summer stages, we followed the Boyz as they played shows and hung out with local Chinese bands in the shadier venues of Beijing and Shanghai and down the Yangtze to the bustling rock communities of the lesser-known south. While we expected debauchery, train chaos, and plenty of baijiu (Chinese moonshine), we were surprised to come upon a relatively diverse and bourgeoning music scene. Oh yeah, this tour wasn't legal; in fact, restrictions were recently put in place to prevent foreign bands from even entering China. Some say it was Bjork's appeal for Tibetan independence, but we're thinking word got out that an American band finally made the rounds through the Chinese underground. And, fortunately for the .00001% of the Chinese population who saw them, Birthday Boyz were there just in time.
