As their name suggests, Ourself Beside Me is a band full of characters. Founded by Yang Fan, the former guitarist from Hang on the Box, OBM briefly included Liu Bao of New Pants and Liu Min from Re-TROS before finally settling on the trio of Yang Fan, Xie Han and Emi (though Zhang Shouwang from Carsick Cars occasionally joins on keyboard).

All the while, they’ve maintained that typical “up yours” Beijing attitude, accompanied by a silent Asian moderation. (Befittingly, they have been known to perform with their backs to the audience.) The majority of this self-titled album is dedicated to instrumentals with very little singing (which is all in English), so that what you hear instead are the heavy drums (Emi), a strong bass (Xie Han), and a quiet voice accompanied by fragmented electronica emerging out of hazy yet powerful melodies (Yang Fang). All the above makes for a deadly combination, or at least one highly reminiscent of Velvet Underground.

Die chinesische Musikszene sollte nicht unterschätzt werden, neben Metal scheint es alle möglichen Spielarten moderner Musik auch dort zu geben, sehr gutes Beispiel sind die Indie-Rockerinnen von OURSELF BESIDE ME, die sich nach einem Song der Vorläuferband HANG ON THE BOX benannt haben, bei denen schon Gitarristin und Sängerin Yang Fan tätig war.

FAZIT: Wer Bands von JUDAS PRIEST bis IRON MAIDEN schätzt, sollte einen großen Bogen um den schrägen Indie-Rock des chinesischen Trios OURSELF BESIDE ME machen, offenere Typen können eine durchaus charmante Frauenband entdecken, die mal wieder westlichen Vorbildern in nichts nachsteht.
