the Lawrence Ku Septet from Shanghai Both Jazz and Blues are small scenes in China, there are few clubs and local musicians (both foreigners and local Chinese) doing gigs, but the development there is slow and actually never caught the real attention of the mass media. An article about Jazz in China on CRI.cn. The main live scene is located both in Beijing and Shanghai. Compare to other genres of modern chinese music happenings, especially the Jazz section offers a high participation of foreign musicians. Bigger events are festivals like Beijing Jazz Festival by Midi Festivals or the Nine Gates Jazz Festival 2009 in Beijing and the JZ Music Festival in Shanghai etc. It is worth to mention that the radio show "All That Jazz" (CRI EasyFM Mon - Thu, 9pm - 11pm) by Zhang Youdai has been almost the only way to access to Jazz music in Chinese mass media for years. |
