Introduction

The dynamo behind the Little Bar in Chengdu talks about expansion plans, Cui Jian and making independent rock records in China's southwest.

CARRACHY from Beijing were headlining. No one else seemed to have heard of them either. But then few people in Chengdu seemed to have heard of the Little Bar. It had taken me two hours of despair with taxi drivers and doormen to find it. I was put right by a couple selling bits of alternative clothing and the tarted-up doorwoman of a nearby karaoke bar who pointed me onwards like I was stumbling on a badly kept secret.
