History
When Scoff's Leo Lee struts on stage in his schoolboy haircut, pervert's raincoat, and Little Richard smile its hard to tell if he is an adorable school kid or a serial killer. When high-school wunderkind Feng Zhe begins to thrash his drums and Liu Yang and Cong Pai turn their guitars up to ten, it suddenly becomes obvious that this deranged choirboy is actually a brilliant rock 'n' roll entertainer with a hippie's soul and a wicked sense of humor.
Since 2005 Scoff has stormed its way into the center of the young Beijing music scene and is considered one of the leading lights in the new wave of young Beijing bands. Aesthetically they are close to their elder-brothers Joyside, and share the same sneering postures and out-of-control playing, but there is something much more innocent and fresh about their approach
The band is always aware of itself on stage and they "play" rock 'n' roll the way a young David Bowie did - as a game that can be manipulated and rearranged as much as they like. This is a band that will probably change their style and look as often as their interests shift, and every time they change they will infuse their new sound with their characteristic brilliance and a hard, shiny edge.
