Wan Li Ma Wang
History
1979, students of the second foreign language institute Beijing form the band Wan Li Ma Wang and organize concerts in various universities of Beijing. The name Wan Li Ma Wang is a composition of the forming members’ family names: Wan Xing, Li Shichao, Ma Xiaoyi, Wang Xinbo (or: Lao Ge, later head of recording department, Baidai-Studios, i.e. EMI).
Their song program consisted mainly of covers from bands such as the Beatles, the Bee Gees and Paul Simon.
Due to a lack of financial resources, of music instruments and a very small pool of musicians with an interest in rock music available in Beijing, all groups including Wan Li Ma Wang were closely connected. Wan Li Ma Wang also worked together with Bu Dao Weng, as this band was supported by their danwei with instruments.
